In 1755, Joseph Black (from the United Kingdom) identified magnesium as an element in Edinburgh and distinguished magnesia (Magnesium Oxide, MgO) from lime (calcium oxide, CaO). The English name of magnesium is Magnesium, which is derived from Greek and originally means "Magnesia". Because near the city of Magnesia in Greece, there was a rich mine of magnesia (magnesium oxide) at that time. The ancient Romans called this mineral "Magnesia Alba". "Alba" means "white", that is, "white Magnesia".
